Nursing License CE Requirements
CE Requirements for Nursing Licenses
Every two years, the Alabama Nursing Board requires nurses to complete the following continuing education contact hours to comply with licensing requirements:
- 24 contact hours for RN license renewal
- 24 contact hours for LPN license renewal
- 24 contact hours for APRN license renewal
Regulations require any nurse licensed by examination after October 1, 2002 to attend 4 hours of Board-provided continuing education for the first license renewal. A registered nurse or licensed practical nurse licensed by examination during the earning period shall earn for the first licensure renewal, four contact hours of Board-provided continuing education related to Board functions, the Nurse Practice Act, regulations, professional conduct, and accountability.
License Expiration and Renewal
Registered Nurse Licenses:
Alabama RN licenses renew in even-numbered years between September 1 and November 30.
Licensed Practical Nurse Licenses:
Alabama RN licenses renew in odd-numbered years between September 1 and November 30.
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Licenses:
Alabama APRN licenses expire on the same date as your Alabama RN license.
If you have prescriptive authority, your prescriptive authority expires at the same time as your license. To renew your prescriptive authority, you must attest to completing ten hours of continuing education (CE) in pharmacology.
