What are the state license renewal requirements for a nurse in District of Columbia?
For registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses in the District of Columbia, there are specific license renewal requirements that the District of Columbia Board of Nursing determines. These requirements include courses for RNs, LPNs and APRNs.

Nursing License CE Requirements
CE Requirements for Nursing Licenses
Every two years, the District of Columbia Nursing Board requires nurses to complete the following continuing education contact hours to comply with licensing requirements:
- 24 contact hours for RN license renewal
- 18 contact hours for LPN license renewal
- 24 contact hours for APRN license renewal
Mandated State Courses
Coming soon: "All health professionals, licensed, registered or certified by a health professional board, will need two credits of CE pertinent to cultural competency or specialized clinical training that focuses on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ) patients. (This District of Columbia law will not be enforced until the regulations have been revised incorporating this requirement. The regulations have not yet been promulgated for APRNs, RNs and LPNs.)"
License Expiration and Renewal
Registered Nurse Licenses:
District of Columbia RN licenses expire on June 30 of even-numbered years.
Licensed Practical Nurse Licenses:
District of Columbia RN licenses expire on June 30 of odd-numbered years.
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Licenses:
District of Columbia APRN licenses expire on June 30 of even-numbered years.
