CE Requirements for Nursing Licenses

Every two years, the New Jersey Nursing Board requires nurses to complete the following continuing education contact hours to comply with licensing requirements:

  • 30 contact hours for RN license renewal
  • 30 contact hours for LPN license renewal
  • 30 contact hours for APRN license renewal

Mandated State Courses

As a condition of biennial license renewal, all New Jersey registered professional nurses and all licensed practical nurses must complete one hour of continuing education concerning prescription opioid drugs, including alternatives to opioids for managing and treating pain, and the risks and signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion.

License Expiration and Renewal

Registered Nurse Licenses:

New Jersey RN licenses expire on May 31 of odd- and even-numbered years based on the date of issuance.


Licensed Practical Nurse Licenses:

New Jersey LPN licenses expire on May 31 of odd- and even-numbered years based on the date of issuance.


Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Licenses:

New Jersey APRN licenses expire on May 31 of odd- and even-numbered years based on the date of issuance.
