Nursing License CE Requirements
CE Requirements for Nursing Licenses
Every two years, the Texas Nursing Board requires nurses to complete the following continuing education contact hours to comply with licensing requirements:
- 20 contact hours for RN license renewal
- 20 contact hours for LPN license renewal
- 20 contact hours for APRN license renewal
An APRN who holds prescriptive authority must complete additional CE above and beyond the 20 hours required for all nurses.
Mandated State Courses
To renew your Texas nursing license, continuing education is required in the following areas:
3 contact hours every licensure renewal on Prescription Drug Abuse: Opioid Diversion and Best-Practice Prescribing
2 contact hours every licensure renewal on Older Adult and Geriatric Care for Texas Nurses
2 contact hours prior to the end of every third renewal cycle on Nursing Jurisprudence and Ethics for Texas: Standards of Nursing
2 contact hours on Forensic Evidence Collection for Texas Nurses: Sexual Assault Examination Guidelines, for nurses working in an ER setting, by the second anniversary of the initial licensure issuance as a one-time requirement
License Expiration and Renewal
Registered Nurse Licenses:
Texas RN licenses renew every two years on the last day of the nurse's birth month in even-numbered years for nurses born in even-numbered years, and odd-numbered years for nurses born in odd-numbered years. First-time renewals can be anywhere from 6 to 29 months.
Licensed Practical Nurse Licenses:
Texas LPN licenses renew every two years on the last day of the nurse's birth month in even-numbered years for nurses born in even-numbered years, and odd-numbered years for nurses born in odd-numbered years. First-time renewals can be anywhere from 6 to 29 months.
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Licenses:
Texas APRN licenses renew every two years on the last day of the nurse's birth month in even-numbered years for nurses born in even-numbered years, and odd-numbered years for nurses born in odd-numbered years. First-time renewals can be anywhere from 6 to 29 months.
