CE Requirements for Nursing Licenses

Every two years, the Utah Nursing Board requires nurses to complete the following continuing education contact hours to comply with licensing requirements:

  • For Utah RN license renewal:
    • During the past 2 years, if you have completed at least 400 hours of licensed practice, you must complete 15 contact hours
    • During the past 2 years, if you have completed at least 200 hours of licensed practice, you must complete 30 contact hours
  • For Utah LPN license renewal:
    • During the past 2 years, if you have completed at least 400 hours of licensed practice, you must complete 15 contact hours
    • During the past 2 years, if you have completed at least 200 hours of licensed practice, you must complete 30 contact hours
  • For Utah APRN license renewal:
    • During the past 2 years, if you have completed at least 400 hours of licensed practice, you must complete 30 contact hours

License Expiration and Renewal

Registered Nurse Licenses:

Utah RN licenses expire every two years on January 31 in odd-numbered years.


Licensed Practical Nurse Licenses:

Utah LPN licenses expire every two years on January 31 in even-numbered years.


Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Licenses:

Utah APRN licenses expire every two years on January 31 in even-numbered years.


Note: At least 60 days prior to the expiration date of a license, DOPL mails a renewal notice to the licensee's address of record.
(Failure to update your mailing address could prevent you from receiving the renewal notice and other important correspondence from DOPL.
