CE Requirements for Nursing Licenses

Every two years, the Virginia Nursing Board requires nurses to complete the following continuing education contact hours to comply with licensing requirements:

  • 15 contact hours and 640 hours of active practice as a nurse, or 30 contact hours for RN license renewal
  • 15 contact hours and 640 hours of active practice as a nurse, or 30 contact hours for LPN license renewal
  • 40 contact hours for APRN license renewal

A nurse practitioner with prescriptive authority shall obtain a total of eight hours of continuing education in pharmacology or pharmacotherapeutics for each biennium in addition to the minimal requirements for compliance.

License Expiration and Renewal

Registered Nurse Licenses:

Virginia RN licenses expire every two years at the end of the nurse's birth month in even-numbered years for nurses born in even-numbered years, and odd-numbered years for nurses born in odd-numbered years.


Licensed Practical Nurse Licenses:

Virginia LPN licenses expire every two years at the end of the nurse's birth month in even-numbered years for nurses born in even-numbered years, and odd-numbered years for nurses born in odd-numbered years.


Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Licenses:

Virginia APRN licenses expire every two years at the end of the nurse's birth month in even-numbered years for nurses born in even-numbered years, and odd-numbered years for nurses born in odd-numbered years.
